Who Makes Silentnight Mattresses? Factory and Owners

Silentnight mattresses are made by Silentnight, in Barnoldswick, Lancashire. That’s the short answer, and it’s well documented. The longer one involves a founder who started with a demob gratuity, a private equity rescue in 2011, and a parent company that now owns a second mattress maker too.

This page pulls the facts into one place, each checked against a live source in October 2026: who owns the company, where the factory is, how many beds it makes, which brands it controls (and which one it lost), and what happens to your old mattress. Where sources disagree, we say so rather than picking the tidiest number.

Key Takeaways

  • Silentnight mattresses are made by Silentnight Group Limited at its Barnoldswick, Lancashire base, where the company has operated since 1949 and in its current premises since 1961.
  • Tom Clarke founded the business in 1946. HIG, a private equity firm, has backed it since May 2011, and it now sits inside The Sleep Group alongside Sleepeezee.
  • Output figures depend on the source and year: about 500,000 beds and mattresses in a 2016 profile, “over 750,000 mattresses” in a 2025 factory feature.
  • Silentnight Group is a National Bed Federation member. Sealy is no longer part of the group: Tempur Sealy took the UK rights back in 2020.
  • Silentnight says it is committed to zero landfill, but its own figures show about 15% of a recycled mattress goes for energy recovery instead.

Who Makes Silentnight Mattresses?

Silentnight mattresses are made by Silentnight Group Limited, a British manufacturer whose registered office is in Barnoldswick, Lancashire. Companies House classifies its business as the manufacture of mattresses. The company was founded in 1946, has been backed by private equity group HIG since 2011, and today operates within a holding company called The Sleep Group. Source: Companies House

One distinction trips people up. When you buy a Silentnight at a retailer, the retailer sells it and Silentnight Group builds it. Where you buy changes your delivery and first point of contact, as our look at where Silentnight is cheapest explains, but not who made the mattress.

Where Are Silent Night Mattresses Made?

Silentnight mattresses are made in Barnoldswick, a market town in Lancashire, England. Silentnight says its products are handmade in the UK. A September 2025 factory profile places production in Barnoldswick and reports that roughly 80% of materials come from suppliers in Lancashire. Source: Hotel Designs

Retailers say the same thing. MattressNextDay’s Silentnight page describes the products as made in Lancashire-based facilities. Source: MattressNextDay

A caveat, because precision matters on a page like this. Those sources describe mattresses, divans and headboards. We found nothing confirming where every pillow, duvet or topper in the wider range is made, so we’re not claiming it. The same Hotel Designs feature adds that the site has an in-house test lab, operating for nearly 50 years and accredited under ISO 9001 and SATRA.

Our take: “Made in Lancashire” tells you about accountability, not about quality. A UK factory means a name, an address and a trade body you can complain to. It doesn’t guarantee that every range lasts. That depends on construction, and our balanced verdict on the brand separates the ranges that earn their price from the ones that don’t.

Who Founded Silentnight, and Where Did It Start?

Per Wikipedia’s company history, Silentnight began on 11 July 1946 as Clarke’s Mattresses Limited in Skipton, North Yorkshire. Tom Clarke founded it with his Royal Navy demobilisation gratuity. It became Silentnight in 1951, a name his wife Joan suggested. The company has been based in Barnoldswick since 1949, and in its current premises since 1961. Source: Wikipedia

Silentnight’s own history page corroborates the year, dating its “official birth” to 1946 and the change from Clarkes Mattresses to Silentnight to 1951. It doesn’t name Skipton or Tom Clarke, so those details rest on Wikipedia alone. The company marked 80 years in business in 2026, and the same page claims over 35 million mattresses made in that time. That’s a self-reported figure we can’t independently check. Who Owns Silentnight Today?

Silentnight is majority-owned by H.I.G. Capital, the US private equity firm, through a holding company called The Sleep Group. HIG first bought Silentnight in May 2011 for about £19 million, after the business went into receivership. Source: Wikipedia In May 2024 The Sleep Group added Sleepeezee, a Kent-based mattress maker. Source: Furniture News

The Sleep Group’s latest results, for the year to January 2025, showed record sales of £154 million. Both brands kept their own sites, in Barnoldswick and Rochester, Kent. The group’s website also lists a third brand, Wow Sleep. It cites more than 1,000 employees across three sites. Source: Furniture News Source: The Sleep Group

What does private equity ownership mean for you? Mostly stability and scale, not quality in either direction. The owner doesn’t change where the mattress is made.

In short: H.I.G. Capital has backed Silentnight since 2011, and The Sleep Group is the holding company that now owns it alongside Sleepeezee.

Which Brands Does Silentnight Group Own?

The National Bed Federation lists Silentnight Group’s brands as Silentnight, Rest Assured, Layezee, Pocket Spring Bed Company and Studio by Silentnight. Sealy is not on that list: Tempur Sealy took back the UK Sealy rights from Silentnight in 2020. Sleepeezee sits alongside Silentnight under The Sleep Group rather than inside the Silentnight Group itself. Source: National Bed Federation

Brand What we could verify, with source
Silentnight The flagship brand. NBF-listed, sold direct and through major UK retailers.

Rest Assured NBF-listed. A 2016 profile described it as over 100 years old and focused on pocket-spring beds.

Studio by Silentnight NBF-listed. Aimed at younger buyers in 2016, and still named in Silentnight’s September 2025 guarantee booklet.

Layezee and Pocket Spring Bed Company Both NBF-listed. We couldn’t confirm their current ranges, so we say no more.

Sealy UK Formerly licensed to Silentnight. Since 2020 it has been run by a 50/50 joint venture, Sealy United Kingdom Ltd. Not a Silentnight brand today.

Sleepeezee Sister brand under The Sleep Group. Based in Rochester, Kent, handcrafting since 1924, with a Royal Warrant held since 1963.

Wow Sleep Listed as a third brand on The Sleep Group’s own website.

What the listings don’t tell you: plenty of older web pages still call Sealy a Silentnight brand, because it was one for decades. If a page lists Sealy among the group’s brands, it’s out of date. Wikipedia also names Perfecta, but the NBF doesn’t, so we haven’t treated it as current.

Miracoil and Mirapocket are Silentnight’s own spring systems. Our Miracoil breakdown explains how the continuous-coil design differs from pocket springs, and our full Silentnight review compares every range.

In short: the National Bed Federation lists Silentnight, Rest Assured, Layezee, Pocket Spring Bed Company and Studio by Silentnight as Silentnight Group’s brands, and Sealy has not been one of them since 2020.

How Many Mattresses Does Silentnight Make a Year?

The most-quoted figure is about 500,000 beds and mattresses a year, but it comes from a 2016 profile. A September 2025 factory feature says Barnoldswick makes “over 750,000 mattresses per year”, and an August 2025 profile cites more than one million bedding products. They count different things, so none contradicts the others.

Source and date Figure What’s counted
Manufacturing Today, Sept 2016 About 500,000 a year Bed and mattress products, Barnoldswick factory
Hotel Designs, Sept 2025 Over 750,000 a year Mattresses
Manufacturing Today, Aug 2025 More than 1 million a year Bedding products (mattresses, divans, headboards)
The Sleep Group website Capacity of 1 million plus Group-wide capacity across three sites, not actual output

Sources: Manufacturing Today (2016), Hotel Designs, Manufacturing Today (2025), The Sleep Group.

Our take: if you see “500,000 a year” repeated across the web, it’s a decade-old number being recycled. The newer figures are higher, but they’re measured differently, so we’d quote the date alongside any number.

Is Silentnight a Member of the National Bed Federation?

Yes. The National Bed Federation lists Silentnight Group as a member under certificate number 22621590. The NBF describes itself as the recognised UK trade association for bed manufacturers and suppliers, founded in 1912, whose members account for about 75% of UK bedding turnover. Source: National Bed Federation The on-site test lab’s ISO 9001 and SATRA accreditation comes from the Hotel Designs feature cited earlier, not from the NBF listing.

Be clear about what that means: trade-body membership signals accountability to an industry body, not an independent product test. Silentnight’s September 2025 guarantee booklet adds British Furniture Manufacturers membership, FSC and Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme membership, and validated Science Based Targets for emissions.

In short: NBF membership means Silentnight Group answers to the UK bed industry’s trade body. It doesn’t mean an independent lab has tested any particular mattress.

Does Silentnight Make the Premier Inn Mattress?

Yes. Whitbread named Silentnight as Premier Inn’s official bed supplier on 8 August 2022, replacing Hypnos, with the rollout starting that October. Premier Inn describes the Mattress 2.0 as made exclusively with Silentnight, built around Geltex foam and 1,000 pocket springs. Hotel Designs also names Premier Inn as a high-volume contract client of the Barnoldswick factory. Source: Whitbread Source: Premier Inn Source: Furniture News

Whitbread’s announcement described a gel-infused comfort layer, a removable zippable topper in the hotel beds, and composite parts that are 92% recyclable. Premier Inn’s 80,000-plus beds across more than 800 hotels are being refreshed as they reach end of life. For specs, prices and where to buy the home version, see our Premier Inn Mattress 2.0 explainer.

What Does Silentnight Do With Old Mattresses?

Silentnight says it is “committed to zero to landfill”. Its collection service takes your old mattress away after the new one is delivered, provided the old one is dry and hygienic. Silentnight says top recyclers can recover over 85% of a mattress, with the remaining 15% sent for energy recovery rather than landfill. Source: Silentnight recycling page

To book, add the recycling service to your basket with a new purchase or call 0333 123 0892. The page doesn’t state a fee. For comparison, MattressNextDay’s disposal page lists £39 for collection at the point of delivery, one old mattress per new one. Source: MattressNextDay

Material Where it goes, per Silentnight
Steel springs Baled and sent to a metal re-processor for smelting
Foam Re-crumbed into products such as carpet underlay and pet beds
Polypropylene Reprocessed into new plastic products
Polyester, cotton and wool Sorted and reused as insulation and furniture padding
Unrecoverable remainder (about 15%) Energy recovery

Can be recycled vs is recycled (%) 85+ Recoverable per mattress Up to 25 UK mattresses recycled (Silentnight) 16 UK mattresses recycled (MattressNextDay)

Chart data: Silentnight (85%+ and up to 25%), MattressNextDay (16%). Both are company-published figures, not official statistics.

Our take: the gap in that chart is the real story. A mattress that can be 85% recycled is a design achievement. Only a minority actually are, because most old mattresses never reach a specialist recycler. The bottleneck is collection, which is why the take-away-on-delivery option matters more than the recyclability claim on the label.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Silentnight mattresses made in the UK?

Yes. Silentnight mattresses are made at the company’s Barnoldswick factory in Lancashire. Silentnight says its products are handmade in the UK, and a 2025 factory profile reports that about 80% of materials come from Lancashire suppliers. We couldn’t verify where every accessory, such as pillows and toppers, is made.

Is Silentnight a British company if an American firm owns it?

Silentnight Group Limited is registered in England with its office in Barnoldswick. Its majority owner, through The Sleep Group, is H.I.G. Capital, a US private equity firm. So the manufacturing and the company registration are British, while the controlling investor is American.

Does Silentnight still make Sealy mattresses?

No. Silentnight was Sealy’s UK licensee until 2020, when Tempur Sealy reacquired the UK rights and assets and set up a 50/50 joint venture, Sealy United Kingdom Ltd. Sealy is no longer listed among Silentnight Group’s brands by the National Bed Federation.

If a Silentnight is made in Lancashire, is it better than an imported budget mattress?

Not automatically. UK manufacture gives you an accountable maker, a trade body behind it and a guarantee you can claim against, but durability depends on the construction of the specific range and the thickness of its comfort layers. Range-by-range differences matter more than the factory postcode.

Who makes the Premier Inn mattress, and can I buy the same one?

Silentnight makes it. Premier Inn’s Mattress 2.0 is built with Silentnight’s Geltex foam and 1,000 pocket springs, and a version is sold to the public through Premier Inn’s own online shop. Sizes and prices change, so check the shop for current figures before you order.

What if my Silentnight mattress goes wrong?

If you bought from a retailer, start there. Silentnight’s guarantees page says to check a third-party retailer’s guarantee first, and its guarantee booklet says it’s usual for the retailer to deal with claims in the first year. After that, or if you bought direct, use Silentnight’s own guarantee process. We walk through the steps, the proof you’ll need and the escalation routes in our guide to Silentnight mattress problems.
